FINLAND TEAM AT THE END OF THE MATCH 35. DEJECTED SWITZERLAND TEAM AT THE END OF THE MATCH STORY: Slovenia won the gold medal in the mixed team ski jumping event at the Milano Cortina Olympics on Tuesday (February 10), led by siblings Nika and Domen Prevc, while Norway claimed silver and Japan took bronze. The Slovenian team of Nika Vodan, Anze Lanisek, along with the Prevc siblings produced a series of consistently strong jumps to finish at 1069.2 points, sealing a comfortable victory over Norway and rarely coming under serious pressure during the competition. Slovenia entered the competition as clear favourites and delivered throughout, building a decisive lead after the opening round. Domen Prevc sealed the victory with the final jump of the night at 102 metres, celebrating on landing, knowing he had secured Slovenia’s first gold in ski jumping at these Olympics. Over in Milan, American figure skater Ilia Malinin delivered his best performance of the Milano Cortina Games, landing two quadruple jumps and even throwing in a backflip in an electrifying men's short program to take the lead. Malinin posted 108.16 points, more than five clear of Japan's Yuma Kagiyama (103.07), with France's Adam Siao Him Fa third on 102.55. Malinin, the heavy favorite for the men's title, did not showcase his full repertoire in his two outings during the team event but still did enough to help the United States grab gold on Sunday. He looked far closer to his peak on Tuesday, feeding off a loud contingent of American fans as he flaunted the technical arsenal that has helped draw new attention to the sport. Whilst in the women's ice hockey, the United States stunned arch-rivals Canada 5-0 to set up a last eight clash with hosts Italy, and Finland beat Switzerland 3-1 in the other Group A game. The top-ranked Americans are hungry for revenge after losing to Canada in the gold-medal game four years ago and sent a message with a lop-sided drubbing that few expected from the typically well-matched powerhouse teams at Santagiulia Arena. The win saw the United States clinch the top spot in Group A. Canada, which had never before been shut out in women's Olympic play, have more work to do before the knockouts with a game against Finland on Thursday, and are currently second on six points. In the night's other fixture Finland edged ahead in a brethless second period, with goals from Viivi Vainikka, Julia Liikala and Sanni Vanhanen. Switzerland had scored a shorthanded goal three minutes before the end of the second period, with Alina Muller taking the puck all the way from the neutral zone to the net to pull it back to 2-1, but Finland responded immediately while still on the power play to add a two-goal cushion, which is how it stayed. The result means Switzerland finish bottom of the group with two points, with Finland fourth on three points. Finland can overtake Canada with a win against the defending champions. The Czech Republic occupy third spot on four points after playing all four games. All five teams from the group advance to the last eight, where the seedings will be determined by their final placing in the standings. (Production: Joseph Andrews)
