POLI LIGHTING CAULDRON STORY: The Olympic Torch Relay toured the Lombardy region on Sunday including a visit to Lake Como as the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Games draw near. The flame was transported by boat between the picturesque towns of Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio before Piero Poli – a former rower and gold medallist at the 1988 Seoul Olympics – lit a cauldron in Lecco, the day's final stop.  Among the other notable torch-bearers were short track speed skating legend Arianna Fontana, who won 11 Olympics medals across her career including two golds, and Andrea Panizza – a silver medallist in rowing at the 2024 Paris Games.  The flame set off from Rome last month as part of a 12,000 kilometre (7,450 mile) trip that will end in Milan's San Siro stadium on February 6 for the Opening Ceremony. The relay has been part of efforts to generate excitement across the country before the Games that will be staged at a variety of locations, with the financial capital Milan and the Alpine resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo as the two main bases.
