Uttarakhand CM participates in 'Narendra Singh Negi Cultural Award' function in Dehradun, says "folk artist getting financial assistance"

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], September 28 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the ‘Narendra Singh Negi Cultural Award’ ceremony held at Social Baluni Public School in Dehradun, and presented the award to S R Harnot, a senior litterateur from Himachal Pradesh, on Sunday, the CMO said in a release.

During the event, the Chief Minister stated that Narendra Singh Negi has touched the hearts of every Uttarakhandi through his songs. Negi Ji has given voice to the soul of Uttarakhand, portraying the joys, struggles, love, and beauty of folk life, thereby invigorating the state’s cultural consciousness.

He added that Narendra Singh Negi has also composed many poignant songs on the pain of migration, environmental concerns, and the struggles of hill women. Through his music, folk melodies, and writings, Negi Ji has elevated Uttarakhand’s cultural heritage to new heights, bringing the state’s essence to the global stage.

The Chief Minister further highlighted that the state is home to numerous traditional songs such as Jagar, Beda, Mangal, Khuded, and many more, which reflect the lifestyle and emotions of its people. Instruments like the Dhol, Damau, Hurka, Mashak, Turri, Bhankora, and Harmonium bring these songs vividly to life.

He mentioned that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state government is actively working to preserve and enrich Uttarakhand’s folk arts. Every six months, a list of the state’s folk artists is prepared. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government provided financial assistance of ₹2,000 per month to nearly 3,200 registered folk artists.

The Chief Minister also noted that the state provides a monthly pension of ₹3,000 to folk artists above 60 years of age or those who are unwell. To further preserve folk arts and culture, the government organises six-month-long folk training workshops, raising awareness among the younger generation about the importance of the state’s traditional cultural heritage.

He added that the government honours outstanding litterateurs through awards such as the Uttarakhand Sahitya Gaurav Award, Sahitya Bhushan, and Lifetime Achievement Awards. Continuous efforts are also being made to preserve local languages and dialects, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their rich linguistic heritage. (ANI)
