ECONOMIC EVENTS Foreigners' trading data in South African bonds and equities Treasury bill auction SOUTH AFRICAN MARKETS The South African rand edged up on Friday, buoyed mainly by higher gold prices, after a purchasing managers' index pointed to improved private sector activity in September but highlighted a gloomy outlook for the year ahead. On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index closed up 1.6%. GLOBAL MARKETS Japanese stocks surged more than 4% to an all-time high while the yen skidded on Monday after fiscal and monetary dove Sanae Takaichi was elected as leader of the ruling party, putting her on course to become the nation's first female prime minister. WALL STREET The S&P 500 eked out a record closing high in a volatile session Friday, with interest rate-cut expectations holding up as the U.S. government shutdown went on for a third day. GOLD Gold surged past the $3,900-an-ounce level for the first time on Monday, driven by safe-haven demand following a fall in the yen, the U.S. government shutdown and the growing expectations of additional Federal Reserve rate cuts.
