"Situation is overall peaceful, under control," Gujarat Police issues update on Vadodara stone pelting incident

Vadodara (Gujarat) [India], September 20 (ANI): Gujarat Police on Saturday provided an update on the Junagarhi stone pelting incident, saying that the “situation is overall peaceful and under control.”

The incident occurred over an alleged objectionable social media post in the Junigarhi area late on Friday night. Over 50 people were detained following a stone-pelting incident.

“The situation is overall peaceful and under control… An objectionable post appeared on social media, prompting people to protest near the City Police Station (last night). During this time, stone-pelting also occurred in the Junigarhi area. Police took immediate action and brought the situation under control,” DCP Andrew Macwan told reporters.

While discussing the actions taken against the culprits, he stated that more than 50 people have been detained. Additionally, police continue to monitor the situation. The Gujarat Police DCP also asserted that patrolling will be done across the city, ensuring that people can celebrate their festival peacefully.

“We have detained more than 50 people. Police are monitoring the situation and are filing an FIR… Police appeal to the public not to pay attention to any rumours… We will take the strictest possible action… There will be police patrolling in Vadodara city so that everyone can celebrate the upcoming festivals peacefully… on Social media, an objectionable post was placed, due to which people protested… Two separate FIRs have been filed… The injured include civilians and police…” added Macwan.

Earlier, the police said, this unrest began after a social media post sparked tensions, prompting a crowd to gather at the city police station to lodge a complaint. While dispersing, a group of people from the crowd allegedly attacked a Navratri pandal, damaged vehicles parked nearby, and resorted to stone-pelting in the area. (ANI)
