"Not the first incident, law and order collapsing in Gorakhpur": Akhilesh Yadav slams UP govt over youth's death

Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) [India], September 16 (ANI): Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the death of a medical student following a confrontation with cattle smugglers in Mauachapi village in Gorakhpur, saying the incident exposed the collapse of law and order in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s assembly constituency.

Yadav claimed recurring crimes in CM Yogi Adityanath’s constituency, including the killing of a businessman.

He said, “This is not the first incident that has happened in the assembly constituency of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath — earlier too, a businessman had been killed by the Police in Gorakhpur. Injustice is happening on a large scale in Gorakhpur and the areas around it. This raises serious questions about the law and order situation. What is the police doing?

The reaction comes after a 19-year-old NEET aspirant, Deepak Gupta, was brutally killed by cattle smugglers in Mauachapi village under the Pipraich Police Station area in Gorakhpur on Monday night, sparking violent protests, stone pelting, and a road blockade, according to police.

The SP Chief urged the UP government to probe cattle smuggling in Gorakhpur and demanded Rs 5 crore compensation and a government job for the slain medical student’s family.

He said, “In the incident in Gorakhpur, it is being said that they were smuggling cattle. The government must look into who the people are who are involved in cattle smuggling in Gorakhpur and carrying out such heinous murders. We demand that the government provide the victim’s family with Rs 5 crores in compensation and a government job, since the youth was a medical student. The Chief Minister should know how expensive medical education is.”

The Samajwadi Party Chief emphasised the seriousness of the issue given Gorakhpur’s political significance.

“In Ghazipur, Kaushambi, and Gorakhpur, such crimes have been taking place continuously, but no major action has been taken so far. The authority of the government and the police has eroded. Gorakhpur is the Chief Minister’s home turf, and if such incidents happen there, it is indeed a matter of serious concern,” Akhilesh Yadav said.

Meanwhile, Gorakhpur SSP Raj Karan Nayyar said that the incident took place around 12:30 am on Monday in Mauachapi village, Pipraich Police Station area. Smugglers arrived with three vehicles; villagers, including Deepak, confronted them as they untied cattle.

Smugglers abducted Deepak, drove him around for an hour, crushed his head, and dumped his body 4 km away.

He said, “We received information at around 3:00 am that cattle smugglers had come to a village with two pickup vans. During this, when the villagers chased them, one vehicle got stuck in the village, the people of which fled from there, and a youth from the village chased the other vehicle, the smugglers took him in their vehicle and later pushed him out of the vehicle. Due to which he suffered a head injury and died after falling on the road. On the complaint of the family, a case has been registered under the relevant sections, and post-mortem proceedings are being done.”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also issued directives in the incident, following which, the District Magistrate, Senior Superintendent of Police, Inspector General, and other senior officials immediately reached the spot. All senior officials are engaging in dialogue with the victim’s family. As per CM Yogi’s directive, strict action will be taken against the culprits. (ANI)
