"A legend", Karnataka Dy CM DK Shivkumar remembers Kannada Poet S.L. Bhyrappa

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], September 25 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar remembered late Kannada novelist and screenwriter S.L. Bhyrappa on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, he praised the writer as a legend in Kannada literature and a great personality.

” I know SL Bhyarappa since 1993-94, when he chaired the Kannada Sahitya Parishad in Kanakapura. He is a legend in Kannada Literature and is a great personality,” said Shivakumar.

Deputy Chief Minister also stated that his writings have been translated into various languages and that he is a recipient of several awards, including the Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan.

“All his writings have been translated into many languages. He has won Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan, among many other awards…” added Shivakumar.

Later, the Dy CM Shivakumar also addressed the issue of potholes in Bengaluru, accusing the BJP of politicising the matter. He attributed the lack of progress over the past three years to the BJP’s mismanagement.

“Of course, there are potholes. I saw them three days ago also… BJP is also trying to do politics, let them do. Our workers will also do the same thing where their corporations are there, whether all those potholes have been filled. We are there at the job. I have only requested the common man and the police to write a letter because there were heavy rains. Because of the misadministration of the BJP in the last three years, no work was done… We are trying to do our work and we will not run away from our job. The CM was kind enough to give us 750 crores to make sure that the refilling of potholes is done…” said Shivakumar.

Earlier, the Deputy Chief Minister attended the funeral of SL Bhyrappa, accompanied by BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje. After paying tribute to the renowned Kannada poet, Karandlaje praised him as a nationalist who guided the nation forward.

“SL Bhyarappa was a nationalist. His writings, his novels, his speeches, and his guidance reflected nationalism. He always guided us to take the nation forward. He won many accolades, including the Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan…” Karandlaje told reporters.

The popular novelist and philosopher SL Bhyrappa died at the age of 94 at a hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday. In 2015, Bhyrappa was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award. He was also honoured with the Padma Shri in 2016 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023 for his contributions in the fields of literature & education. He also got the Saraswati Samman in 2011. He had also served as a member of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing of eminent author and thinker, describing him as a towering stalwart who stirred the nation’s conscience and delved deep into the soul of India.

“In the passing of Shri S.L. Bhyrappa Ji, we have lost a towering stalwart who stirred our conscience and delved deep into the soul of India. A fearless and timeless thinker, he profoundly enriched Kannada literature with his thought-provoking works. His writings inspired generations to reflect, question and engage more deeply with society,” PM Modi said in a post on X.. (ANI)
